For the past two years Flying With Fish has floated along on Blogger. Blogger has been a good home, however today as the tide rolls in Flying With Fish has moved to swim among a new school of flyers.
As of today Flying With Fish has swum over to BoardingArea. Don't worry; you'll still be able to float on by at www.flyingwithfish.com

As a traveler, I personally enjoy reading The Cranky Flier blog.
Thanks for your support of Flying With Fish as it grew in its old home and thank you for your continued support as we move to a new home at BoardingArea.

Flying With Fish To Join Mountainsmith's Design Board

7/11/2008 – Flying With Fish To Join Mountainsmith's Design Board
Since very early on in my writing on Flying With Fish I have written about my enjoyment of using Mountainsmith's products. I have been using Mountainsmith gear for years. Along the way I have modified their gear to meet my needs, and packed their bags well beyond their intended design specifications.
Earlier in 2008 Mountainsmith recognized my completely unaffiliated, non-endorsed and unsolicited promotion of their gear and sponsored a contest on Flying With Fish. While I kept in touch with Mountainsmith over the past year, I assumed at most they would maybe sponsor another contest at some point.
Well at this time Mountainsmith is not sponsoring another contest I know of (although they are welcome to), what they have done is asked me if I'd like to join their Design Board.
It took me all of 3 seconds to accept the invitation to be a part of the process of helping design bags that make life easier for photographers. I have been involved with other companies in the past in the testing of bags, but this should be a whole different process.
So now I'll not only be a happy, long time, loyal customer of Mountainsmith products, I'll also have a hand in helping creative process of designing the bags I choose to use. It is great that Mountainsmith looks outside its own internal design team to incorporate those who use their products in the field. As my background and use of their bags is different that many of those who use their gear for hiking, climbing and working outdoors, I hope to bring a unique perspective to the table.
My joining Mountainsmith's Design Board does not prohibit me from using other bags, traveling with other bags, discussing other bags or reviewing other bags. I have many bags for many different purposes and will continue to use the other bags in my closet. I'll also continue to use whatever bag is best for each specific job.......and should the opportunity come up to work with a non-competing company, work with them as well.
My goals in working with Mountainsmith, as well as maintaining Flying With Fish, are similar. My goal is to make life easier for those who travel and put those on the road at the forefront of everything I put into these projects.
............what else may be in the future for Flying With Fish and Mountainsmith? Keep your eyes open for some retooled workshops in the near future.

It is a new month, and the start of the month that is home to one of my favourite holidays.....Halloween.
What does any of this have to do with Flying With Fish launching in Twitter? Well, this is the kind of information I will not be posting on Twitter. I know Twitter is a great social tool, however I am sure the readers of Flying With Fish are not interested in when I headed to Starbucks to pick up my next Izze's Sparkling Grapefruit Soda or when I am contemplating purchasing my next Red Sox t-shirt.
What is it I plan to use Twitter for? My intention is to send out quick updates on information that I believe can be of interest to travelers, photogs on the road, and general info on Flying With Fish and The Travel Strategist. My use of Twitter is not intended to be a streaming source of news, but just general information I find interesting and helpful.
The information I plan to distribute through Twitter is along the lines of:
"British Airways has announced a new two for one special on select routes!" ; "Check out this AeroChannel.com FlyGirl feature: http://aerochannel.com/features/4263521"

This week was a 'short week' for me, as I spent most of this week in the hospital having surgery and recovering from surgery. My posts this week were posted in my absence by others, thanks! I'll be on my back a few more days, unable to move my head up-down or side-to-side, but with a project on the calendar for Sunday I had better heal quickly!
This week was primarily filled up with experimenting with Flying With Fish Video. For a few days this past weekend I had access to a Flip Video Camera so I decided to see what I could do. Having never really shot video in the past, and never put together a video piece in the past; I figured "what the heck" and shot a few quick segments. Some people find video very easy, I found there to be a steep learning curve with video, however I may play with this medium again and see what I can do with a little more time, and possibly a camera with better audio.

Aside from these three experimental videos, this week I kicked off Flying With Fish discussing baggage fees that affect surfers. While surfers make up a minority of the flying public, the fees they are being saddled with are out of line and should be redirected at other flyers who's baggage weighs more, using more fuel and who could bring in a more consistent revenue stream. I'm flapping my wings and moving to a new fish bowl!
My move this weekend happens both physically and online. My online move begins today as I change web hosts. After years of happily swimming around with S2F, the hosting business is closing up shop. The creators of S2F founded PhotoShelter (www.photoshelter.com) a few years ago and have chosen to focus entirely on that business. For you photographers looking for an outstanding and professional place to host and control your archive, for both clients or stock sales you should check into PhotoShelter.
In the land of linear time and space my house is being packed and we're taking the show on the road! After four years of living in a cramped house (in all fairness when I moved into this house I only had one kid and one large dog and now I have three kids and two large dogs) we're moving from a fishbowl to a full-sized aquarium. While the move is physically less than one mile the new place will let my kids spread their wings out and swim around with more space and freedom (and I'll get my own office.....woohoo!)
So, for those of you who check Flying With Fish daily,the web address www.flyingwithfish.com will be off-line for 24-to-48 hours, however you can pop in and visit Flying With Fish at: http://flyingwithfish.blogspot.com . During this transition my e-mail may be delayed for up to two days as well.

Yesterday the International Herald Tribune wrote a story, in which I was quoted a number of times, on the new TSA Self Select Lanes being set up in certain airports. This morning more than one reader informed me that The New York Times had run a very similar article.
In todays article in The New York Times, which is by the same journalist as the International Herald Tribune's story, I am again prominently quoted for my opinions and experiences related to the new TSA Self Select Lanes (Black Diamond Lanes) being set up in certain airports.
As Flying With Fish continues to grow it is nice to know my opinions are respected and being sought out by others. My goal with Flying With Fish, as it has been from the start, is to simple help inform photographers who must travel for work......and now most anyone who flies for business of pleasure....on how to fly safely, easily, with less stress, and how to be prepared for whatever may await them during their journey from Point A-to-Point B.

'Go Flying On Fish' Contest Winners Announced....Yes 'Winners,' I Chose More Than One!!

9/06/2008 - 'Go Flying On Fish' Contest Winners Announced....Yes 'Winners,' I Chose More Than One!!
John Davis, of Sparks, NV, a political science graduate student and aspiring professional photographer, takes the "official" top prize of a $100 gift card for travel anywhere within Southwest Airlines' system.
John's goal is to travel between the US/Canadian boarder in Blaine, WA and in Buffalo/Niagara Fall, NY. Starting his observations and research in Blaine, WA John intends to document his interactions at the US/Canadian boarders between Washington State (US) and British Columbia (Canada) he’ll then fly with Southwest Airlines out to Buffalo, NY, watch the interactions at the Buffalo/Niagara Falls boarder crossings at the three boarder between New York (US) and Ontario (Canada).
John hopes to compare the differences between US immigrations agents and Canadian agents. Additionally John wants to see if there is a difference in attitudes and operating procedures between the two boarders that are roughly 2,100 miles (3380km) apart.
John's compelling pitch really caught my attention as I have a considerable interest in the documentation of 'Homeland Security.' I found his pitch detailed, educated and extremely well thought out. I whole-heartedly support the advancement of students and the study of, and documentation of, national security related topics.
I HAVE ALSO SELECTED ANOTHER 'GO FLYING ON FISH' RECIPIENT!
While reviewing hundreds of entries for the 'Go Flying On Fish!' one stood out from the rest for it's own individual reasons. This entry was not polished (not that I chose a polished entry), it was not detailed or written in a clean and experienced manner, but it stood out and I kept coming back to it.
The entry is from Trenton Moore, a high school student from Central Florida. Not only did Trenton's words appeal to me, his macro work is wonderful. I really enjoyed the samples of the work he sent me, most of his work is on par with what I expected, but Trenton's macro work and detail work is excellent and should be encouraged and furthered!
What does Trenton want? He'd like to head up to the city I was born in (well one borough over from where I was born) and photograph the iconic buildings that make up the skyline of Manhattan. Bright colours and chrome seem to be his attraction. Considering I started my shooting career in New York, was born and raised next to JFK Airport, and love shooting architecture how could I say no to this request?
I e-mailed Trenton to tell him I needed to get an e-mail from his parents to tell me they were on board with his interest in traveling to New York. Yesterday afternoon Trenton's Mom dropped me an e-mail back that's she'd love to encourage Trenton's interest in photography and is OK with him hopping a Southwest Airline flight to either Islip or Philadelphia than taking the train into New York to shoot what captures his imagination.
.........so now torn between what I considered a clear winner (John Davis) and someone who I wanted to encourage (Trenton Moore) I decided one $100 flight credit on Southwest Airlines was not enough and decided what the heck..... give 'em both $100 towards their journeys!
So John and Trenton...You Are Free To Move About The Country!

20/05/2008 - A Month In The Life Of A Flying Fish
Every once in a while someone will ask me "What makes you a Flying Fish?"
The answer to the first part of this question is simple; I have been called "Fish" since I was a young child. It is a nickname that has stuck with me throughout my life.
What makes me a "Flying Fish?" Rather than tell you what makes me a "Flying Fish," I'd rather review my last month of work and let you find our for yourself.
From 4-April to 4-May, In the course of shooting assignments and other commissioned photo projects, I flew 32,306 miles; crossed the Atlantic Ocean 3 times; crossed the North American Continent 3 times; crossed the Pacific Ocean once; crossed through Immigrations 9 times; flew through 7 countries; flew on airlines bearing the flags of five different nations (from three different continents); shot projects in 12 cities; worked on three continents..............and in one trip during this month, I flew completely around the world in 3.5 days, shooting projects in four cities, in four countries, on three continents.
My experience as a business traveler is fairly extensive. My travel is diverse from short-haul regional flights, to frequent 'mid-haul' transcontinental travel and extremely hectic long-haul intercontinental flights. Along the way I have paid attention, taken notes and most of all watched, waited and watched some more.
Coupling my in-depth knowledge of traveling as a commercial airline passenger with the information I gained while working as a news photographer, having spent 3.5 years documenting 'homeland security' both domestically and abroad, I have created an extensive personal data base of information. Now, I pass along this information to the public in an effort to make everyone's life just a little bit easier when heading to the airport to catch a flight to the see a loved one a few hundred miles away or a new client half-way around the world.
For you new readers of Flying With Fish......Welcome!
For you readers familiar with Flying With Fish, thanks for your support. There are some new things I have in the works for the future and I hope you stick around to see them as I start to roll them out.
For those of you interested in my work, outside of Flying With Fish, I am ending this post with 15 images from my work between the 4th of April 2008 and the 4th of May 2008. These images are all dated and posted in chronological order.
.........and now it's time to pack for the next trip. In two days I take off for a 16,000+ mile journey to photograph a wedding in Hong Kong. The total time I'll be away for this trip? 70 hours round-trip.

The answer to the first part of this question is simple; I have been called "Fish" since I was a young child. It is a nickname that has stuck with me throughout my life.
What makes me a "Flying Fish?" Rather than tell you what makes me a "Flying Fish," I'd rather review my last month of work and let you find our for yourself.
From 4-April to 4-May, In the course of shooting assignments and other commissioned photo projects, I flew 32,306 miles; crossed the Atlantic Ocean 3 times; crossed the North American Continent 3 times; crossed the Pacific Ocean once; crossed through Immigrations 9 times; flew through 7 countries; flew on airlines bearing the flags of five different nations (from three different continents); shot projects in 12 cities; worked on three continents..............and in one trip during this month, I flew completely around the world in 3.5 days, shooting projects in four cities, in four countries, on three continents.
My experience as a business traveler is fairly extensive. My travel is diverse from short-haul regional flights, to frequent 'mid-haul' transcontinental travel and extremely hectic long-haul intercontinental flights. Along the way I have paid attention, taken notes and most of all watched, waited and watched some more.
Coupling my in-depth knowledge of traveling as a commercial airline passenger with the information I gained while working as a news photographer, having spent 3.5 years documenting 'homeland security' both domestically and abroad, I have created an extensive personal data base of information. Now, I pass along this information to the public in an effort to make everyone's life just a little bit easier when heading to the airport to catch a flight to the see a loved one a few hundred miles away or a new client half-way around the world.

For you readers familiar with Flying With Fish, thanks for your support. There are some new things I have in the works for the future and I hope you stick around to see them as I start to roll them out.
For those of you interested in my work, outside of Flying With Fish, I am ending this post with 15 images from my work between the 4th of April 2008 and the 4th of May 2008. These images are all dated and posted in chronological order.
.........and now it's time to pack for the next trip. In two days I take off for a 16,000+ mile journey to photograph a wedding in Hong Kong. The total time I'll be away for this trip? 70 hours round-trip.
